10 Natural Home Remedies To Cure Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is infection of the skin under the nail. As the name suggests, the infection is the result of fungi. The fungi rapidly multiply in number under the nail. This causes discoloration of the nail. Some people also experience slight pain if pressure is applied to the nail.

More than 60% of the people who suffer from this infection are adults who have diabetes or a weak immune system. Therefore, it is very important to treat the infection with both medicines and some home remedies. Here are some home remedies that will help you to cure toenail fungus safely and naturally.

Natural Home Remedies To Cure Nail Fungus

1 . Vinegar

Vinegar has acidic properties that help inhibit the growth of certain types of fungi and bacteria. To treat nail fungus with vinegar mix a cup of vinegar in two cups of warm water. Soak the infected nail inthis liquid combination for 15-20 minutes. After soaking the feet in vinegar wash it well with plain water and pat it dry or use hair dryer to dry your nail completely. The vinegar treatment should be done daily at least thrice a day, for up to 4 weeks. You will soon see a difference in the color of your nail. Vinegar will not only prevent the fungus from growing but will also remove the existing fungus from the skin.

2 . Garlic

Garlic is a natural antifungal agent. When consumed, it can boost the body’s ability to inhibit abnormal fungal growth. To clear the infection rapidly, eat about two cloves of fresh garlic daily. Consider applying garlic paste or garlic oil to the infected toenail.

3 . Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a potent antifungal agent. Applying tea tree oil to the infected toenails provides fast relief from fungal infection. The antifungal property of tea tree oil is attributed to terpinen-4-ol and other terpenoids present in tea tree oil. Studies suggest that tea tree oil is as effective as common antifungal pharmacological creams in treating toenail fungal infection. 100% tea tree oil is usually used for healing fungal infection of the toenail. Apply a small amount of tea tree oil to the infected toenail to avoid side effects such as irritation, itching and blistering following application of undiluted tea tree oil.

4 . Oregano Oil

Oregano essential oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that make it very effective in treating nail fungus. However, no essential oil should be rubbed directly on the skin as it has very strong acidic properties that can irritate and harm the skin.

For this reason, essential oils are always mixed with carrier oils before application. Mix four drops of oregano essential oil with three drops of olive oil or almond oil. Rub this mixture of oils over the infected area. Do this treatment at least 4-5 tim es in a day regularly for three weeks. The new nail that grows back will be healthy, clear and shiny.

5 .  Baking Soda

To cure toenail fungus, blend half cup of baking soda with a one-fourth cup of peroxide, half cup of Epsom salt, and four cups of hot water. After making this mixture, add a one-fourth cup of white vinegar to it. Soak the affected toe first into vinegar for a few minutes and then, apply this paste on the affected nail. Wrap it with a bandage or tape. For about four weeks, repeat the process in every ten hours. If this remedy is followed properly, the toe nail fungus will disappear quickly.

6 . Corn Meal

One of the more interesting remedies for toenail fungus is organic cornmeal.  Corn naturally hosts a form of fungus that is harmless to the human body but deadly to Candida – the most common fungal parasite that causes infections in people.  In a container big enough to fit your foot (or both feet if needed), mix one cup of cornmeal and about two quarts of water.  Allow the cornmeal to soak in the water for at least one hour then submerge the infected foot (or feet) in the mixture for a half hour or more.  While the frequency of use for this remedy is up for debate, sources have reported success with treatment performed as seldom as once per week.  Others say to perform it daily. Because cornmeal is totally harmless to skin and nails, realistically the treatment can be repeated as often as you like.

7 . Lavender Oil

Because of several volatile compounds and antiseptic properties, lavender oil also acts as an effective natural home treatment for toenail fungus. Apply it with the help of a cotton ball beneath the top edge of the infected toenail and nearby area. Wear a pair of thick woollen socks after applying it to let it work more effectively.

8 . Coconut Oil

Caprylic acid, one of the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil, has the ability to penetrate the durable cell wall of Candida and other fungi.  Without its protective coating the cells of the fungus dissolve, effectively destroying the infection.  Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to infected areas and let it soak in for at least fifteen minutes.  Coconut oil is great for skin health, so there is no limit to how often you can use this treatment.  Just make sure you aren’t allergic to coconuts before applying this product to sensitive tissue.

9 . Grapefruit Seed

Grapefruit seed extract can be applied to unpolished nails twice daily. This extract has natural antimicrobial properties and some believe it’s effective in treating nail fungus. Scientific studies have not yet verified its efficacy.

10 . Bleach

The chlorine in bleach should do a job of killing fungus but this home remedy is recommended only if your toes and toenails survive as well because Bleach’s potency may also damage your skin and nails. Again, damaged nails and skin will be more easily re-infected. Using bleach to kill off nail fungus is not recommended if you have a sensitive skin.
